1. Times of India: 3/5 by Rachit Gupta. Visit site for more

“Director Shree Narayan Singh’s Batti Gul Meter Chalu (BGMC) is a film that talks about a very pertinent issue, a fundamental right and a basic amenity, which is often denied to the common man in various parts of our country. But for all its good intentions, BGMC is also a fairly flawed film. The movie needed a tighter editing effort, because at five minutes short of 3 hours, the narrative becomes overbearing.”

2. CNN News 18 : 3/5 by Rajeev Masand Sen. Visit sitefor more

“The script spends way too much time on set up before it gets to the meat of the story For the most part, Batti Gul Meter Chalu keeps you engaged because the story has enough to chew on. The film is crippled however by excess. Clocking in at nearly three hours, someone clearly left the meter chalu too long. Still I’m going with three out of five. This is one of those mainstream movies that delivers its message coated with a thick layer of melodrama. And it works”

3. Koimoi : 2.5/5 by Umesh Punwani . Visit sitefor more

“All said and done, Batti Gul Meter Chalu says a very important thing but the treatment messes all up. It’s high time Shahid Kapoor gets his due in Bollywood but this is not that film. Watch it for its intent & Shahid Kapoor! Two and a half stars!”

4. GulfNews : 3/5 by Manjusha . Visit site for more

“Shahid is in great form as a cheeky lawyer who can be petty one second and heroic the next. All the principal actors deliver on the acting front, but the screenplay is choppy and inconsistent.Shahid’s designer beard and perfectly combed hair also serve as a welcome distraction, but it makes you wonder if his suaveness befits his small-town rebel role. While the film gives you an idea about the gravity of the power-supply problems in Indian small towns, it doesn’t stoke the activist in you or make you enraged on behalf of the common man. You remain a mute spectator and that makes this film a lost opportunity”

5. Khaleej Times : 1.5/5 by Anita Iyer . Visit site for more

“Shahid forcefully delivers a high-voltage performance that come across as gimmicky with an anti-establishment monologue thrown in, talking about the trials and tribulations of the common man, that falls flat. The courtroom drama also snowballs into a revolution of sorts at a national level that is too superficial for a film like Batti Gul Meter Chalu. Director Shree Narayan Singh, who gave us Toilet-Ek Prem Katha, fails to deliver here. You won’t miss a thing if you give this movie a pass”

Batti Gul Meter Chalu Story:

“S.K (Shahid Kapoor), Nauti (Shraddha Kapoor), and Tripathi (Divyendu Sharma) are childhood friends. S.K is a hypocrite, mean lawyer making money from out of court settlements. Nauti is an over the top fashion designer who thinks highly of herself. Things were breezy until Tripathi opens a small town Printing Press. Within months, he is charged with an Inflated elctricity bill of 1.5 Lakhs, which escalates to 54 Lakhs in the following months. With no where to go and complain, Tripathi commits suicide. S.K is set aback by the events and has a change of heart. He decides to fight out against SPTL , a Privatised Electricity Company responsible for the Inflated Bills. Whether or not he is able to sue the company forms the rest of the story.”
